Summer School: The Birth of Solar Systems

Theme: Evolution, Observation, and Modelling of Protoplanetary Disks and Planet Formation
Location: Bertinoro, Italy
Dates: 25 February – 6 March 2025

Programme Overview

The spring school will include the following key components:

  • Introductory Talks: Participants will introduce foundational topics in the summer school’s themes.
  • Lectures by Leading Researchers: Topics covered will include:
    • Formation and Early Evolution of Protoplanetary Disks
    • Late Stages of Protoplanetary Disks and Planet Formation
  • Practical Exercises: Hands-on sessions will focus on data analysis from the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA).
  • Excursions: Local excursions around Bertinoro will enrich the programme.
  • Participant-led Discussions
  • Poster Sessions: An opportunity for attendees to present their research.

Formation and Early Evolution of Protoplanetary Disks

  • Evolution of young stellar objects
  • Dust formation and evolution
  • Accretion and ejection processes, including accretion streamers, jets, outflows, and outbursts
  • Physical and chemical processes involved in disk formation
  • Formation and evolution of young protostellar disks
  • Substructures and early signs of planet formation within young disks

Late Stages of Protoplanetary Disks and Planet Formation

  • Physical and chemical structure of protoplanetary disks
  • Molecular species, abundances, and chemical processes
  • Planet detection techniques, including velocity kinks and direct imaging
  • Formation processes for gaseous and rocky planets

Poster Sessions

Poster sessions will be held in the early part of the event. Posters should be in DIN A0 format (portrait orientation, height 119 cm, width 84 cm).

Practical Exercises

Exercises, primarily focusing on ALMA data analysis, will take place later in the course. Detailed information will be provided to participants in advance.

Excursions

Two excursions are included:

  • Half-Day Excursion to Ravenna: Saturday, 1st March
  • Full-Day Excursion to San Marino: Sunday, 2nd March

Both excursions, as well as all meals, are included in the course fees and bursaries.
