Summer School: Traces of Early Life

The lecture room is equipped with a PowerPoint projector and audio equipment. If lecturers need some other technical devices, they should contact the organisers in good time. The venue of the poster session will be announced in due course.

Meals

Breakfasts will be at the accommodation sites of the participants, if not announced otherwise. Lunches and dinners will be at Stirling University during the course part and at other placed during the excursion. Also packed lunches can be organised during the excursion.

Accommodation

Accommodation will be in single with en-suite facilities during the lectured part and the last 2 days in Stirling and in multiple women’s and men’s dormitories during the excursion.

At Stirling, people will be accommodated in single rooms at Juniper College. There is also a shared kitchen equipped with a cooker, fridge, freezer, microwave and kettle. The college also has a living/dining space with communal television and a launderette.

ullapool

In Ullapool participants will be housed in multiple (2-5) male or female rooms at the Ullapool Youth Hostel, Shore Street, Ullapool IV26, +44 (0) 1854 612 254, email: ullapool@hostellingscotland.org.uk

WiFi access is free for all guests and other facilities include: a well-equipped self-catering kitchen, two comfy lounges with sea views, an excellent laundry and a drying room.

WiFi is free for all guests and other facilities include: a large self-catering kitchen, comfortable TV lounge, laundry, drying rooms, a luggage store.

At Durness, attendees will be housed in Durness Smoo Youth Hostel, Smoo, Lairg IV27 4QA, phone: +44 (0) 1971-511-264, email: durness@hostellingscotland.org.uk. None of the rooms are en-suite but ample shower and washroom facilities are available. WiFi is free for all guests and other facilities include: a well-equipped self-catering kitchen, and a small drying room. Basic provisions, confectionery and soft drinks are available to purchase at reception and local shops are only a 15 minute walk away. The hostel is licensed so you can enjoy a local ale or glass of wine while relaxing in the hostel’s cosy lounge with its coal-burning stove.

Getting to Stirling

The best way is first to fly into Glasgow (GLA) or Edinburgh (EDI) airport.

From Glasgow Airport you can take the airport express (500) to Dundas Street, which is very close to (50m) Glasgow Queen Street station. From there, there are frequent direct railways by Scotrail to Stirling Train Station.

From Edinburgh airport you can take the airport express (500) to Edinburgh Haymarket station. From there, there are frequent direct railways by Scotrail and LNER to Stirling Train Station. There is also a direct bus “909” from Edinburgh Airport Hotel to the University Main Entrance, but it does not run very frequently.

From Stirling station to University Main Gate

Leave the railway station and go to bus station Stance B: Take from there an “Unilink” bus or “15A” (direction “Perth”) to the University main entrance.

From University Gate to Juniper Court

Step out and walk into the University along “University Road W”. After 150 m fork left onto “Hermitage Road” and continue along a lake until you reach a T-junction. You see Juniper Court on your right. Travel time about 1h 45 min.
