Impacts and their role in the origin and evolution of life

The conference  “Impacts and their Role in the Origin and Evolution of Life” will be taking place from 1 - 4 September 2025 . It will be in the picturesque city of Nördlingen which is situated inside the world-famous Ries crater in southern Germany.

General information

The conference "Impacts and their role in the origin and evolution of life" will take place from 1 to 4 September 2025 in the picturesque city of Nördlingen , which is situated inside the world-famous Ries crater in southern Germany.  It aims to cover the role of meteorite and comets impacts in the formation of Earth, its atmosphere and the evolution of life. The course consists of lectures, pratical exercises and student-led discussions. Participants wil also have the possibility to display their own research results in one or two poster sessions. The European Astrobiology Institute and the Stockholm University Astrobiology Centre, and the University of Neu-Ulm  will function as co-organisers of the conference:

  • Impacts and the early history of the Solar System
  • Impact structures as indicators of target properties
  • Role of impacts in delivery and formation of the building blocks for life
  • Impact-generated habitats for life
  • Environment effects of impacts
  • Impacts as threats for life and humankind
  • Geoconservation, education and outreach of impacts

We also will have two one-day excursions, one around the Ries crater on 4th September and one half-day excursion on 2 September to the Steinheim crater with its famous central uplift feature.

Participants will also have the possibility to display their  research results in two poster sessions.

The venue is only a 10 min walk from the Nördlingen railway station. with good connections to the airports of Frankfurt (FRA), Stuttgart (STR) and Munich (MUC). Munich and Stuttgart are the airports with the best connections to Nördlingen. By train the ICE fast train station  Donauwörth  is only a 20 minute direct railway ride away. See the German railway website for connections.  The lecture room is equipped with a PowerPoint projector and audio equipment. If lecturers need some other technical devices, they should contact the organisers in good time. The venue of the poster session will be announced in due course. For access by car please check the map to the ride. Parking places are available in the  hotel garage (fee) or a 5 minutes walk from the hotel (free).

Nördlingen is situated on the famous "Romantic Street" from Füsssen to Würzburg. An ideal possibility to combine a holiday with the confeence.

Accommodation  and meals

Participants will have the choice between accommodation in single rooms at the Hotel Klösterle (en-suite bathrooms). The rooms at Hotel Klösterle have en-suite bathrooms with WC and shower or bath tub, comfortable sitting areas and are decorated in contemporary style, using natural colors and dark wooden furniture. They are equipped with TV and Minibar. All places offer free wireless internet. Lecturers will be offered single room accommodation in Hotel Klösterle.

Breakfasts are included in the room prices  at Hotel Klösterle (if  you book there). Lunches and coffe breaks will be at the same place (apart from during excursions, see bekow). Thee are plenty of nice places for dinners in the Old Town close to the hotel.
